Struggling for gift ideas for your Granny, or want to add a little free-motion to your favourite jacket? Look no further than this gorgeous little landscape brooch.

I couldn’t create sewing tutorials without giving the humble brooch the spotlight it deserves. I’ll be honest, the small-scale nature of this does make it a little fiddly, but take your time and pin to your hearts content. This charming piece is the perfect low-key accessory to add a little crafty twist to any outside, and as always, is great for those scraps lingering in your fabric stash.

Landscape Brooch:

You will need:

  • Felt – This will make up the base of your brooch. I used blue for mine as the background of my landscape design, but feel free to use whatever colour you like. I would aim for a nice thick fabric here.

  • Scrap fabric – I chose two lovely greens for my hills, but use whatever scraps you have lying around; it can be as realistic or abstract as you like.

  • Thread – I used a green for the hills, a little white for the clouds and a blue to stitch the whole thing together.

  • Large safety pin – I used the biggest that I could find. A kilt pin would be perfect for this one.

No free motion foot? No problem.

This brooch can also be made with a regular foot, just adapt your design accordingly.

How to make:

1.       Cut out all of your pieces – your two little hills and the main piece of your brooch, which should measure 1.5 x 3 inches.

2.       Taking your time, sew your hills onto one end of the fabric, which will form the front side of your brooch. Make sure that you are only taking up half the length of your fabric with your design, the top half will form the back of your brooch. I stitched one hill and then layered the other on top. This can be fiddly, so pin everything in place if you need to, and watch your fingers on that needle!

3.       Once your hills are stitched in place, add any embellishments above that you like. I did two delicate little clouds, but you could add a sun, or birds. Just make sure to keep within the 15 inches as otherwise your design will be lost on the back of the brooch.

4.       To put your brooch together, fold in half so it is now a 1.5 x 1.5 inch square. Leaving about a centimetre allowance by the fold, to insert your in, start stitching around the edge of your design. Again, this can be fiddly, so I’d definitely suggest pinning both sides of the fabric together. Go around the side, bottom and side again, leaving the fold at the top with your centimetre gap.

5.       Now it’s time to complete your brooch. Slide your safety pin in, and move the fabric around so it lays on the non-opening side of the pin, to leave the other free for attaching to garments.

Your little landscape brooch is now complete! This is a great one for honing in those precision sewing skills, and layering fabrics on top of one another. This makes a great low-effort gift for a loved one, or for yourself to add a little something to a jacket or dress.
